Credit to Governor Mario López Valdez ("Malova") of Sinaloa for taking the issue of femicides seriously and not brushing it under the carpet, as has largely done e.g. Enrique Peña Nieto in Mexico State:
Malova considered the rise in femicides in Sinaloa "alarming," and called for a special investigation by his justice department to analyze the so far 56 reported cases of femicides this year, where the women have been targeted principally for being women. Last year saw 111 cases in the state.

Four-and-a-half billion pesos: PRI left massive debt in state of Sinaloa
Yet another PRI governor leaves his state with a crushing debt:
Jesús Aguilar Padilla was the PRI governor of Sinaloa from 2005-2010; indeed, until position coalition candidate Mario López Valdez (Malova) won the Sinaloa gubernatorial election last summer, the state had never switched hands from PRI.
Malova's administration now reveals that Aguilar Padilla left the state with debts of more than 4.5 billion pesos, in addition to a budget deficit of half a billion pesos.
The debts puts the state's finance in danger of collapse, according to Armado Villarreal Ibarra, secretary of state finances.

Cuotas y cuates? Among allies, discontent with Malova cabinet appointments in Sinaloa
The new governor of Sinaloa, Mario López Valdez (Malova), who to recall led a victorious broad coalition that included both the PAN and PRD to end a 8-decade PRI hegemony in Sinaloa, had earlier declared he would not fill the cabinet with cuotas y cuates, or according to party quotes and friendships, yet he is now accused of his allies, such as Lucas Lizárraga (PRD), Jorge Luis Sañudo (PT), Felipe Manzanarez (Convergencia) and Francisco Solano (PAN), of doing just so:
This Friday, his political allies questioned his appointment of Francisco and Rocío Labastida Gómez de la Torre, none other than the sons of his friend and also ally, former PRI governor and presidential candidate Francisco Labastida Ochoa, as coordinator of strategic projects and director of the center of science in Sinaloa, as well as that of Juan Ernesto Millán Pietch, also a son of an ex-governor, Juan Millán Lizárraga, to the plum position as secretary of tourism.
Perhaps it is more of a preventive measure from his coalition partners than anything else, as many positions remain to be fulfilled, but the criticism appears certainly to have put the new governor on the defensive.

A historic day in Sinaloa: Malova assumes as governor on the first day of 2011
It's a historic day in Sinaloa: 82 decades of PRI hegemony ended today with the assumption of Mario López Valdez, better known as "Malova," as governor.
True, and lest we forget Malova is an ex-priìsta who remains close to PRI´s 2000 presidential candidate, Francisco Labastida, a fellow sinaloense, but his assumption of power nonetheless represents a significant break with the old PRI structures that have maintained control of the state since 1929. This was only possible due to a very broad opposition alliance led by PAN and the PRD.
